A mind-body psychologist can provide education to reduce your fear and anxiety and increase your motivation to stick with the health changing protocols. But often, you simply need a counselor to talk to throughout the treatment process.
We offer cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness based strategies to:
- Help you understand the dynamic interaction between your health, pain, stress, and mood
- Assist in reducing any emotional distress associated with your chronic health experiences
- Address your psychological concerns stemming from genetics, biology, social or other causes
- Help you develop adaptive strategies and skills to cope with stress and your health
A mind-body psychologist can also help make sure you maintain your improvements from your treatments and don’t relapse when you don’t follow the protocol. Sometimes, you just need to be able to recognize and cope with difficult aspects of the treatment. A psychologist can help you practice new coping techniques and self-management strategies, particularly when faced with hard or high-risk situations.
Insomnia Treatment includes cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia (CBT-I) which has been found to be more effective than sleep medication. Patients generally do better in treatment after they have discontinued sleeping medication under their physician’s supervision. Treatment includes stimulus response training, resetting circadian rhythms, sleep restriction, relaxation, and addressing irrational thoughts regarding sleep. We can also assist you with CPAP tolerance training if needed. Treatment usually involves about five or six 60 minute sessions over the course of 6-8 weeks.
